NORCAL Rep Pee Wees win California State Tier II Championship
3/2/98

The NORCAL Rep Pee Wee team traveled to Escondido to take part in the California State Tier II Championship, and they brought home 18 championship trophies.

The Pee Wees faced the LA Junior Ice Dogs in the championship Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first period, Rep opened the scoring at the 12 minute mark of the second period with a goal by Kyle Spraker, assisted by Mike Grzanowski. The next six minutes saw two more Rep goals, by Matt Erickson from Ian Brown and Michael Fink, and by Jeff Hazelwood from Heath Ocampo and Jared Katz. The 3-goal lead did not hold up for long as the Ice Dogs came back with 2 goals of their own, the second coming with 3 minutes remaining in the game. But Jeff Hazelwood's second period goal stood as the game-winner, as the NORCAL Rep Pee Wees under head coach Phil Hazelwood and assistant Bob Fink became the first team in NORCAL Rep and NORCAL history to win a state Tier II title.

The real test of the weekend came Sunday morning in the semi-final game against a determined Westminster Wave team. The Rep team went out to an early lead on a first period goal by Heath Ocampo (assisted by Jeff Hazelwood and Jared Katz), and a goal early in the second period by Nick Brassill (set up by Mike Grzanaowski). But at the 6:32 mark of the second, the Westminster team scored a short-handed goal, followed by a second goal to tie the game with only 17 seconds on the clock in the second.

The action went back and forth in a hard-fought third period, with the Westminster team controlling the play through much of the period. But the Rep defense in front of goaltender Chris Kelley held the Wave in check. Suddenly, an errant pass by a Westminster player near the red line was pounced on by Rep's Heath Ocampo, and he was off to the races, beating the Westminster goalie for the eventual game-winning goal.

The Rep Pee Wees were undefeated in preliminary play, with victories over West Valley Wolves (5-1) and Anaheim Junior Ducks (14-0) and a 5-5 tie with the Beach Cities Lightning.

By virtue of their title, the Rep Pee Wees advance to the Pacific District Championship Tournament in Portland, Oregon, starting March 18th. The winner of that tournament will travel to Huntsville, Alabama to represent the Pacific District in the USA Hockey Tier II National Championships.

Pee Wees win Championship in Mile High Invitational in Littleton Colorado
11/29/98

The Pee Wees traveled to Littleton, Colorado for the Mile High Invitational Tournament over the long Thanksgiving weekend, and came home bearing the first place trophy.

In five tough preliminary games, the Pee Wees made it clear that they were a force to be reckoned with, notching 4 wins and one loss in preliminary play. They defeated teams from Albuquerque, NM (7-0), Omaha NE (9-1), Utah (7-0) and Phoenix (5-2). Their only loss was to host Littleton, 1-0.

Their 4 wins were enough to secure them the 2nd place seed in the semi finals, where they faced Phoenix for the right to advance to the championship. NORCAL won by a 4-2 score.

This win set up a rematch with host Littleton, the only team to have beaten NORCAL in the tournament. This game was as close as a hockey game can be, going three full periods and a 7-minute overtime with no score. The tournament rules called for a shootout to settle the game, and NORCAL prevailed on a goal by Heath Ocampo in the second round of the shootout.

The final official score showed NORCAL the Champion after a 1-0 OT victory.
