For the second consecutive year, the NORCAL Rep Blue Diamonds 12-U Girls hockey team swept the Pacific District Regional Championships. Under the direction of coaches Tom Wallace and Lynn Howe, the Blue Diamonds won the Regional title by going 4-0 in the tournament held March 11th through 14th in Anaheim, California.

Last year, the Blue Diamonds won the Pacific District Regional championships, tallying four shutouts over a five game series, totalling 29 goals for, 1 goal against. This year's regional tournament presented a tougher challenge. In the championship game, the Blue Diamonds faced home team favorite Team L.A. Last year, Team L.A. did not compete in the Pacific Regional championships. They received a bye as the host team of the National championships, where they turned in a strong performance, ranking 4th.

The Pacific Regional championship game was intense. Following two scoreless periods, NORCAL opened the scoring at the 2nd minute of the 3rd period, with a goal by Ashley Ocampo, assisted by Kellie Howe. Minutes later, Alina Rock scored the second goal, assisted by Elena Saxton. The remainder of the game was a tense stand-off, with parents in competition for the most vocal cheers. Final score: Blue Diamonds 2, Team L.A. 0. Team Blue Diamonds Goalie Christina Freeman stopped all shots on goal in a fine shutout effort.

In the tensest preliminary game, the Blue Diamonds started off the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Team L.A. The lone goal in the game was scored by Alina Rock, unassisted, on a breakaway in the 8th minute of the 2nd period. Goalie Amanda Rowe turned away 24 shots in her shutout, and defenders Michelle Chee, Novella Genelza, Tarra Chibidakis, Ashley Ocampo, and Annie Lathrop turned in an outstanding defensive performance.

In the tournaments second game, the Blue Diamonds turned back the Seattle Ladyhawks. Last year, the larger and older Ladyhawks were the Blue Diamonds toughest competitor. In this years Pacific Regional tournament, the Blue Diamonds rose to the physical challenge. Final score: 6 to 0. The Blue Diamonds effort featured a balanced attack of six goals scored by six team mates. The first Diamond goal was scored at the end of the first period by Laura Wallace, assisted by Tarra Chibidakis. The second Diamond goal was scored in the 8th minute of the 2nd period by Kimberly Tan, assisted by Elena Saxton, followed less than 20 seconds later by the third goal shot by Tarra Chibidakis and assisted by Ashley Ocampo and Laura Wallace. Less than two minutes into the third period, the fourth goal was scored by Ashley Ocampo, assisted by Kellie Howe. Goalie Christina Freeman turned in another fine shutout performance.

In the final regular game of the tournament, the Blue Diamonds defeated the Alaska Firebirds, with a final score of 6-2, featuring a four-goal performance by Ashley Ocampo, Assistant team captain and center. The other two Blue Diamond goals were scored by Melissa Tan and Laura Wallace.

NORCAL Rep Blue Diamonds team members include girls from age 8 to 12, and from all parts of Northern California. Currently, team members represent cities from Santa Rosa to Santa Cruz to Fresno. Due to the lack of competitive girls hockey teams in Northern California, the Blue Diamonds primarily play boys Squirt A/B and PeeWee A/B teams to prepare for tournaments against other girls teams. They will once again represent the Pacific Region in the Womens National Hockey Championships, to be held in Washington D.C., April 8-11, 1999.
