The NORCAL Rep Bantam team traveled to Escondido to take part in the California State Tier II Championship, and they brought home 18 championship trophies.
In the championship game Sunday afternoon, they faced the West Valley Wolves, a team they had not seen all year. The Rep team started out strong with two first period goals. With less than three minutes gone, Sean Haq started the scoring with a goal assisted by Justin Guerra and Amir Moazeni. Less than six minutes later, Rep tallied again with a goal by Jason Aldrich from C. J. Viso and Andres LaFlor. Halfway through the second period, Ryan Castagna added a goal, assisted by B. J. Howe, to give the Rep team a healthy 3-0 lead.
The West Valley team, however, came back with 2 goals within 30 seconds during the third period to make a hockey game of it. With 8:11 remining in the game, the score stood at 3-2.
Depite facing 13 shots in the period, Rep goaltender Matt Mouser kept West Valley from scoring again, and with 5 seconds remaining on the clock, Rep Defenseman Andres LaFlor added an empty-net goal to seal the 4-2 victory and the state title. The players, along with head coach Dave Hazelwood, celebrated their title, and 2 legs of the Rep Club Tier II title sweep were complete.
Before getting to the championship game, the Rep Bantams had to face a tough Beach City Lightning team in the semi-final Sunday morning. Beach City took the lead in the first period with a goal off Rep goaltender Robbie Hazelwood.
The Rep team looked tentative as penalty after penalty was called in the first period. Totalling only 7 shots on goal after two periods, the Rep team looked as if they might be in trouble. But they finally came alive in the third period. B. J. Howe tied the game with a goal set up by Matt Penn. And with 2:41 remaining in the game, defenseman Eric Burlin scored on a shot from the point, set up by Banks Concepcion and C. J. Viso. The Burlin goal would stand as the game winner as the Rep defense and goalie Hazelwood held off Beach City's final barrage.
The Rep Bantams were perfect in preliminary play as they defeated the Westminster Wave 7-3 (a game in which B. J. Howe had 4 goals and an assist); South Coast Sabres 4-1 (3 more goals for Howe); and the San Diego Gulls 5-2.
By virtue of their title, the Rep Bantams advance to the Pacific District Championship Tournament in Anchorage, Alaska, starting March 19th. The winner of that tournament will travel to St. Joseph, Missouri to represent the Pacific District in the USA Hockey Tier II National Championships.
The NORCAL Rep bantams traveled to Littleton, Colorado over the long Thanksgiving weekend to take part in the prestigious "Mile High Invitational" in Littleton, Colorado.
The Bantams opened play against Southwestern League foe Phoenix, skating to a 2-2 tie. They came back that evening to face a strong team from Oamaha, Nebraska, losing a 3-1 decision.
They opened play on Friday on a better note, cruising to wins over Wyoming (9-0) and Albuquerque (12-0). Saturday afternoon, they faced host Littleton, winning a 5-3 decision. Their 3-1-1 record was good enough to secure the 3rd place seed in the semi final round.
The NORCAL team faced off against the 2nd place Littleton team, and three full periods and an overtime were not enough to produce a winner. Tied 3-3 after both regulation and overtime, the game came down to a shootout. Littleton prevailed in the shootout 3-2, advancing to the championship game.
The Rep bantam team left the tournament proud of their accomplishments, looking forward to a chance to return to this event again next year.
The NORCAL Rep Bantam team took their perfect record into Phoenix, Arizona for the second meet of the year of the Southwestern League, and came out of the weekend with their unblemished record intact.
Opening play with a 6AM start against the Dallas Jr. Stars, a bleary-eyed Rep team managed a 2-1 victory. Coming back later that same morning, the Rep team faced host Phoenix, holding on to win by an identical 2-1 score.
The following morning, the Reps faced southern California rivals Beach City Lightning, and coasted to a 7-1 victory. They sealed the perfect weekend with a 4-0 shutout victory over another Southern California team, the Bay City Bombers. Their 8-0 record after two weekends puts the Reps in solid possession of first place in their division.
The NORCAL Rep Bantams hosted the Southwestern League American conference teams at their home trink in Oakland, California. The Bantams played four games over the weekend, winning them all.
The Reps faced the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes (2-1), Dallas Jr. Stars (3-0), Beach City Lightning (7-0) and the Bay City Bombers (5-3). They finished the weekend in posession of first place in the division, with a 2-point lead over Phoenix.
The Reps travel to Phoenix, Arizona on November 9 to face the same 4 teams.
The 1998-99 NORCAL Rep Bantam team opened their season with a trip to the annual Glacial Gardens Labor Day Hockey Festival. The bantams finished the weekend with four victories over impressive Southern California opponents, including a 7-2 victory over traditional rival South Coast Sabers, and shutout victories over Dynamo LA and Westminster Wave.
