Pee Wee Tier I - Anchorage, AK Bantam Tier I - Bloomington, MN Midget Tier I - Pittsburgh, PA Pee Wee Tier II - Oswego, NY Bantam Tier II - Marquette, MI Midget Tier II - Houston, TX Girls / Women - Troy, MI
Both the Midgets and Pee Wees lost quarterfinal matches today to bring two incredible streaks to an end. The Midgets lost a 3-2 decision to the South Boston Midgets. Boston went out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Rep team battled back, drawing even near the end of the second period, but a Southie goal in the last minute of the second period proved decisive.
The Rep Pee Wees were dealt a similar fate in their quarterfinal match. Facing a strong team in the Michigan Jaguars, they fell behind early in the first period, yielding 3 goals in the first six minutes. They played the rest of the game even, but the 3-goal lead was too much to overcome. The final score was 5-2.
Look here for more details on Monday.
Despite disappointing losses in the final game of the preliminaries, both the Midgets and Pee Wees advanced as at-large teams to the quarterfinals.
The midgets opened with a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Fire. They followed with a 2-0 loss to the Eastside Kings, from Detroit, Michigan. Needing a win or a tie to advance to the quarterfinals, they ended up settling for a 3-2 loss to a hungry team from Maine. When the game was over, their 4-team division looked deadlocked. After a 30-minute meeting to unravel the tie breakers, it was declared that the Rep midgets had managed to hang on to the 8th spot in the tournament, qualifying to play Saturday against a strong team from South Boston. The Boston team won 2 and tied one in preliminary play.
The Pee Wee's schedule was almost identical to the midgets. They opened with a win over the South East district team, from Reston Virginia, by an 11-3 score. In a game against the eventual division winners, they lost a 4-1 decision to the Michigan Jaguars. In their final game of the preliminary round, the lost a tough decision to the New England rep, the Seacoast Spartans, 3-1. Their 1 win and their consistent competitiveness in close losses gave them the nod in the tie-breaking system, and they advance to the Quarterfinal round Saturday. They face the Michigan Jaguars for a second game.
The NORCAL Rep Club Midgets and Pee Wees both advance to the USA Hockey National Championships with victories at Portland.

See the Pee Wee team page for a more complete story.
The Bantam team took a 3-0 lead into the third period against a very strong West Valley Wolves team, but West Valley answered with two goals of their own in the third to make for a very exciting finish. NORCAL added an empty-netter and held on for the 4-2 victory and the state title. Ryan Castagna's second period goal stood as the deciding goal as the Bantams celebrated the second NORCAL Rep title.
See the Bantam team page for a more complete story.
The Midget team faced off against arch-rival San Diego for the state title, a matchup both teams have been thinking about since September. Despite spotting San Diego leads of 3-1 and 4-2, the Midgets scored two quick goals to tie the game near the end of the second period. With only 23 seconds remaining in regulation, Drew Sanders scored the game winner on a breakaway set up by a defensive turnover by San Diego. The NORCAL Rep defense took over to hold San Diego for the final seconds, and the Midgets began an exuberant celebration to complete the NORCAL Rep sweep.

NORCAL Rep Bantam team wins SYHL League Championship 1/19/99 |
|
All four NORCAL Rep teams traveled to Dallas, Texas over the long MLK weekend, and the Rep Bantams, under head coach Dave Hazelwood, returned home as 1998-99 Champions of the Southwest Youth Hockey League, with a banner and trophy to show for their efforts.
The Bantam team finished preliminary play with a 3-0-1 record, earning a bye into the semi final round. They faced a tough opponent in Beach City, who had managed a tie against NORCAL in the preliminary round. But the Rep team prevailed, winning 5-2.
That set up the final against Phoenix. Late in the third period, Rep led 3-1, but a determined Phoenix team managed a late goal to pull within one. During the last minute of play, with six attackers on the ice and an empty net behind them, a momentary lapse by one of the Phoenix defenders was pounced on by Rep forward Jason Aldrich, who put the puck in the empty net to secure the victory and the league championship.
All four NORCAL Rep teams traveled to Dallas, Texas over the long MLK weekend, and in addition to the Bantam championship, the other three teams posted strong showings.
The Rep Midgets, under coach Derek Eisler, finished preliminary play with a perfect 4-0 record, allowing but one goal in four games. Posting victories over Bay City (6-0), South Coast (6-0), arch-rival Littleton (3-1) and Mountain View Washington (5-0), the Midgets seemed destined to bring home the championship.
But hockey is a funny game, and when they dropped the puck for their semi-final game against host Dallas, it was soon apparent that the Dallas team was on a mission of their own. Dallas scored a power play goal early in the first period, and the Rep Midgets answered back with a goal of their own later in the period. It stood at 1-1 until halfway through the third, when a Dallas player dumped the puck in front of the net from the corner, and it deflected off a Dallas player and found its way into the net.
Despite a valiant effort to get the goal back, the Dallas team held off the Rep Midgets for the 2-1 victory. The loss brought an end to the Midgets' 16-game unbeaten streak, and a 13-game unbeaten streak in SYHL play. Dallas went on to lose the championship game to San Diego by a 2-1 score.
The NORCAL Rep Pee Wee team, under head coach Phil Hazelwood, came as close to winning the championship as they could, but fell one goal short, losing a 6-5 decision in the championship game to Beach City. The Rep Pee Wees posted an impressive 4-0 record in the preliminary rounds, beating Utah (13-5), Mountain View Washington (14-1), Los Angeles Wildcats (7-4) and Phoenix (7-1).
The four victories put them in the semi-finals against Phoenix, who battled hard but lost by a 6-4 score.
The championship game was a classic battle between NORCAL and a determined Beach City team. Although NORCAL had beaten Beach City twice in the regular season, the Beach City team came out with a purpose. NORCAL went out to an early 2-0 lead, but Beach City responded with four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead. NORCAL battled back, coming to within 1 at 5-4. Then Beach City scored their sixth which turned out to be the eventual game winner.
The loss brought an end to the Pee Wees' 18-game unbeaten streak, and an incredible 24-game unbeaten streak in SYHL play, dating back to December 29, 1997.
The NORCAL Rep Squirt team, under head coach Jon Gustafson, built on their success at Lakewood over the Christmas break to put in a strong showing in the league championships. Their preliminary round record of 2-2 was good enough to place them second in their pool and set up a quarterfinal match against a strong Los Angeles Wildcats team. Despite outshooting the Wildcats by nearly a 2-1 margin, the Wildcats were able to eke out a 3-1 win over the Rep squad.
Aside from host Dallas, NORCAL Rep was the only organization who put all 4 teams in the quarter- and semi-finals, and director of coaches Derek Eisler believes the experience will make all of the Rep teams even more determined when they travel to Escondido in February for the California State championships.
All four NORCAL Rep teams traveled to Lakewood, California over the holiday weekend, and came away with 19 victories and three divisional titles.
The NORCAL Rep Bantam team, under coach Dave Hazelwood, completed a perfect regular season, finishing with an unparalleled 13-0-0 record in Southwestern League play. The Pee Wee team, under head coach Phil Hazelwood, was one point behind, finishing with a 12-0-1 record. The Midget team, under coach Derek Eisler, finished their season with a 13-1-2 record. All three teams finished in first in their division, and each team holds the best record overall in their age class.
The NORCAL Rep Squirt team, under coach Jon Gustafson, finished their regular season with 5 convincing victories. Their final record of 5-3-1 gives them very favorable seed in the upcoming league championships.
All four teams travel to Dallas, Texas for the league championships January 14-18. See each individual team page for scores and more details: Squirts; PeeWees; Bantams; Midgets.
Final SYHL standings are available for Squirts; PeeWees; Bantams; Midgets.
The NORCAL Rep Midget team took a charter bus to Medford, Oregon for a 3-game exhibition against the Portland Winterhawks. Tieing two and winning one against the Portland team, the weekend was marred by an injury to winger Mike Romano. See the Midget Team Page for more details and scores.

The Midgets defeated host Littleton, Colorado with an overtime goal to win the Championship game. The Pee Wees needed 3 periods, an overtime and a shootout to win their championship.
The Bantams lost an overtime decision during the semi final round.
Director of Coaches Derek Eisler expressed his enthusiasm over the efforts of the three teams, noting with pride that all three of our teams were still alive and competing on the final day, two of them emerging with new hardware to decorate the Rep Club trophy case.
